Detecting Hepatitis B Among Pregnant Women: A Growing Concern at Ho Teaching Hospital

An ongoing study at the Ho Teaching Hospital aims to identify cases of Hepatitis B among pregnant women, promoting early diagnosis and ensuring timely, appropriate care for affected mothers and their babies.

Hepatitis B remains a significant public health concern, particularly among pregnant women. An infected mother can transmit the virus to her baby during pregnancy or childbirth, making early detection an essential part of protecting both maternal and newborn health.

At the Ho Teaching Hospital, an ongoing research project is investigating Hepatitis B virus infection among pregnant women attending antenatal care. The study seeks to determine the presence of the Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) among pregnant women and examine factors that may be associated with infection.

The study, titled “Detection of Hepatitis B Virus Among Pregnant Women in the Ho Teaching Hospital,” is being conducted as part of an undergraduate research project in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. The project is expected to involve 300 pregnant women recruited during antenatal visits.

Participants are provided with information about the study before samples are collected for testing. The research is expected to generate useful data on the occurrence of Hepatitis B infection among pregnant women receiving care at the hospital.

Preliminary findings from the first 90 participants tested have identified 13 positive Hepatitis B results, while 77 participants tested negative. These early findings represent only a portion of the intended study population and should not be interpreted as the overall prevalence of Hepatitis B among pregnant women at the hospital.

Nevertheless, the preliminary results highlight the importance of continued screening and awareness among pregnant women. Detecting the infection during pregnancy creates an opportunity for timely medical advice, appropriate clinical follow‑up, and measures aimed at reducing the risk of mother‑to‑child transmission.

The research has, however, faced challenges in recruiting participants. The number of pregnant women attending antenatal services at the study site has been lower than expected, slowing the pace of data collection and making it more difficult to reach the intended sample size within the expected timeframe.

To improve recruitment, the research team extended sample collection to the Ho Municipal Hospital. This move is intended to increase access to pregnant women attending antenatal care and support the study in reaching its target number of participants.

Despite this effort, balancing fieldwork with academic responsibilities has presented another challenge. Many pregnant women report for antenatal care at times that overlap with the researcher’s lecture schedule. Managing these competing responsibilities has therefore become an important part of the research process.

The study uses rapid diagnostic testing as an initial method of detecting Hepatitis B infection. Participants who test positive may undergo further testing to confirm their status. This approach allows the research team to identify individuals who may require additional clinical attention.

Beyond detecting infection, the study also collects information that may help researchers understand factors associated with Hepatitis B among pregnant women. This includes sociodemographic characteristics, obstetric history, and selected behavioural practices.

For pregnant women, Hepatitis B screening should not be viewed simply as another medical test. Knowing one’s Hepatitis B status provides an opportunity for timely medical advice and appropriate interventions. It also helps prevent an infected mother from unknowingly transmitting the virus to her newborn.

The preliminary findings from the Ho Teaching Hospital should therefore be interpreted with caution. With only 90 participants tested out of the planned 300, more data are required before meaningful conclusions can be drawn about the extent of Hepatitis B infection within the study population.

As sample collection continues, the research is expected to provide a clearer picture of Hepatitis B infection among pregnant women attending antenatal care. The findings could contribute to greater awareness of the importance of Hepatitis B screening during pregnancy and reinforce the need for early detection and appropriate follow‑up.

Ultimately, the study serves as a reminder that behind every test result is a mother and a child whose health can be affected by an infection that requires timely attention. Continued screening, public education, and appropriate healthcare interventions remain essential in reducing the impact of Hepatitis B on mothers, newborns, and families.
