Guava Leaves Show Promise In Prostate Cancer Research

Laboratory research at the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) has found that guava leaf extract may have potential in the fight against prostate cancer, after the extract reduced the viability of human prostate cancer cells in controlled laboratory tests.

The findings showed that hydro‑ethanolic extracts of local guava leaves (Psidium guajava) contained natural antioxidants, including tannins and saponins. Chemical assays also demonstrated that the extracts could neutralize free radicals—unstable molecules associated with oxidative stress and cellular damage.

When tested on human prostate cancer cells (PC‑3), the extract inhibited cancer cell growth by between 44 and 59 per cent at different concentrations. Tests on non‑cancerous cells recorded noticeably lower toxicity, suggesting that the extract may have some selective action against cancer cells.

The research is significant because prostate cancer remains a major health challenge among men, while existing treatments such as surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation can be costly and may cause side effects or face drug resistance.

However, the findings are preliminary and were obtained from laboratory cell cultures. They do not establish that guava leaves can cure or treat prostate cancer in humans.

Further animal and clinical studies are therefore needed to determine the safety, effectiveness, and potential therapeutic application of guava leaf compounds. If confirmed, the findings could support the development of affordable, locally sourced materials for future cancer research and treatment.
