Who or what is your consolation?
I. MY DEAR BROTHERS, what is your consolation? Who comforts you? Do you have a fortress? Where do you run to? When pain comes, everyone runs to something for comfort. The question is: is your comfort strong enough to hold you? Every human being has a “consolation"—something they run to when life breaks them. Some run to money, some run to food, alcohol, social media, friends, titles, or even denial, but those things are like bandages on a deep wound. They cover it, but they cannot heal it. Today, God is asking us a piercing question: Because your consolation determines how you survive the night seasons of life. The world has many comforters, but they are temporary, but God offers permanent consolation. To the world, money is a source of consolation; therefore, we are warned. 1 Timothy 6:10 “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil.” Money can buy medicine, but not peace. It can buy a bed, but not sleep. Ecclesiastes 5:10: “Whoever loves money never has enough.”
II. MY BELOVED SISTERS, some people may offer a form of consolation; friends fail, family disappoints, and even spouses may leave. We are warned in Psalm 118:8-9. “It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in humans.”
People can walk with you, but they cannot carry what only God can carry. Sometimes we scroll, we drink, we work, and we pray to numb the pain, but Proverbs 14:13 says, “Even in laughter the heart may ache.” False consolations sedate you; they do not heal. Jesus said in John 14:1 “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me.” He knew we would need a stronger anchor. God alone is the God of all comfort; this is who He is by nature. He comforts like a mother. Isaiah 66:13 “As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you.” When you feel abandoned, God draws you to His chest. In John 14:16-17 He assured us of a comforter. “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever, the Spirit of truth.” “One called alongside to help.” When you can’t pray, He prays for you. When you can’t sleep, He keeps watch over you.
III. SON OF MAN, God’s comfort is not escape from trouble. It is strength in trouble. He comforts us in our troubles as in Isaiah 51:12, “I, even I, am he who comforts you.” David in Psalm 23:4 stressed that "even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.” The rod corrects. The staff guides. Both are forms of comfort. God turns our mourning into strength. Matthew 5:4 “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.” Your testimony of consolation is someone else’s survival. Joseph could say to his brothers, “God meant it for good" (Genesis 50:20). Paul could write letters of hope from prison. Philippians 4:6-7. Beloved, the PRACTICAL QUESTIONS: WHERE DO YOU RUN WHEN YOU HURT? In grief: Do you run to memories alone or to the God who says, “I am the resurrection and the life"? In marital problems: Do you run to bitterness or to the God who heals the brokenhearted? In financial pressure: Do you run to anxiety or to the God who says, “Cast all your cares on me"? In protracted struggles: Do you run to quitting or to the God who says, “My grace is sufficient for you"? At the office: Do you run to gossip and complain, or to the God who gives peace that passes understanding? When meeting cast-down brethren: Is your consolation for them your opinion, or the Word of God? Isaiah 40:1 “Comfort, comfort my people, says your God,"
IV. DAUGHTER OF ZION, a wrong consolation will leave you thirsty again tomorrow. Only Christ is the “living water” that satisfies forever. Come honestly: Psalm 62:8 “Pour out your hearts to him.” God can handle your raw pain. Anchor in the Word: Romans 15:4 “For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide, we might have hope.” Invite the Holy Spirit: John 14:26 He will remind you of God’s promises. Become a comforter: After God comforts you, go and comfort someone else. That’s how healing multiplies. Child of God, storms will come. Loss will come. Disappointment will come. The question is not if you will hurt. The question is who will hold you when you hurt. The world’s consolations are like a candle in a hurricane. But God is the God of ALL comfort. He does not run out. He does not get tired. He does not leave. This is a DIVINE NEW DAY PROPHETIC WORD of encouragement sent forth through the authority and power of Christ Jesus and delivered to the brethren through God's vessel, Francis Ameyibor. Yes! Revelation 21:4 is our future promise: “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain.” Your consolation is not a thing. Your consolation is a person. And His name is Jesus.
V. 2026 IS OUR YEAR AND SEASON TO BE LIFTED UP—If it’s anything other than Jesus, lay it down today. Come to the One who said in Matthew 11:28
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
PRAYER: Father, we confess we have often run to broken cisterns. Forgive us. Today we choose You as our consolation. Be close to the brokenhearted in this room. Be strength to the weary. Be at peace with the anxious. And when You comfort us, make us carriers of Your comfort to a hurting world. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
