A Memorable Visit to Leuk: Celebrating Culture, Community, and Compassion

On 12th April 2026, I had the privilege of visiting Leuk in the Canton of Valais, where I attended a deeply inspiring community event organized by Mrs. Vanesa Venetz—a Ghanaian whose impact is felt both in Switzerland and back home in Ghana.

Vanesa hosted a durbar of Ghanaian dishes to raise funds for her charitable initiatives in Ghana, particularly her support for orphanages, elderly people (especially widows), and the education of vulnerable individuals. Her dedication to giving back is admirable and deserving of collective encouragement.

The event followed shortly after her birthday, which she celebrated by participating in the city market, showcasing and selling Ghanaian foods and products. I extend my heartfelt congratulations to her and wish her many more years of health, strength, and fulfillment.

A Scenic Journey and a Warm Welcome

The trip from Berne to Leuk was an adventure of its own. We travelled through the picturesque Swiss countryside and several tunnels—remarkable features of Switzerland’s world‑class infrastructure. A standout moment was passing through the Kandersteg Tunnel, where vehicles are transported by train through the mountains. It was a fascinating experience.

Upon arrival, we were welcomed into a beautifully arranged event center adorned in the vibrant colors of the Ghanaian flag. The stone-built structure evoked memories of historic buildings in Aburi, creating an immediate sense of cultural connection and familiarity.

Nature, Sustainability, and Reflection

The surrounding landscape was breathtaking—almost impossible to capture in words. The well-maintained natural grass in the compound also sparked an important reflection. Unlike artificial turf, which contributes to heat retention, microplastic pollution, and disposal challenges, natural grass remains a more sustainable and environmentally friendly option. This is a conversation worth advancing, especially as Ghana continues to develop its sports infrastructure.

Leuk, located in Valais, is also renowned for producing some of Switzerland’s finest wines. It was intriguing to see grapevines flourishing right at people’s doorsteps, even in seemingly less fertile soils—made possible through efficient irrigation systems. This offers a valuable lesson on how we can better utilize available land for local food production.

Culture at the Heart of the Gathering

The event took place near the historic Château de Leuk, a 13th‑century landmark also known as the Bishop’s Castle, adding a rich historical backdrop to an already meaningful occasion.

At the heart of the gathering was culture. Through food, Vanesa beautifully introduced the local community to Ghanaian traditions. Meals were shared generously, with voluntary donations supporting her charitable work. The atmosphere was warm, communal, and filled with genuine cultural exchange. I had the opportunity to interact with many attendees and even shared a moment of music by singing How Great Thou Art.

A Call to Support Impactful Work

Vanesa’s work is both impactful and inspiring. It reminds us that when compassion meets commitment, individual efforts can transform lives.

Let us continue to support initiatives that bridge cultures, uplift communities, and strengthen the bonds between the Ghanaian diaspora and home.
