Court Slashes ‘Bawumia Ba’ Bail from GH¢1m to GH¢50k
The Accra Circuit Court has reduced the bail granted to TikToker Aminat Mahama, popularly known as “Bawumia Ba,” from GH¢1 million to GH¢50,000 as police continue investigations into allegations of offensive conduct.
Under the revised conditions, the court directed her to provide two sureties, one of whom must be a civil servant earning at least GH¢2,500 monthly. She is also required to surrender her Ghana Card to the police and report regularly to investigators until the case is concluded.
The latest ruling follows an earlier decision by Accra Circuit Court 2, which initially granted her GH¢1 million bail with two sureties—one being a civil servant earning not less than GH¢5,000 monthly. She was further ordered to deposit her passport or Ghana Card and report periodically to police.
Aminat Mahama was first arrested in May 2026 by the Police Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team (CVET) after TikTok videos allegedly showed her making insulting remarks about President John Dramani Mahama and comments authorities interpreted as threats against the President and First Lady, Lordina Mahama.
Police say some of her statements also allegedly encouraged acts of violence, prompting a broader investigation into possible offences linked to her online activities.
Known online as “Bawumia Ba” for her vocal support for former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, she built a sizeable following through political commentary and other social media content.
She was later re-arrested after allegedly repeating similar remarks, leading to her latest appearance before the court.
Although the bail amount has now been significantly reduced, the substantive case remains pending. She is expected to comply fully with the revised bail conditions while police complete their investigations.
