Mzbel claims hospital beds shortage led to her sister’s death

Ghanaian musician Mzbel has alleged that her elder sister died after she was unable to secure a bed for treatment at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.

In an emotional video shared on Sunday, July 5, 2026, the singer announced the death of her 46-year-old sister, Leila, while struggling to hold back tears.

According to Mzbel, her sister was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, but the family was informed that there were no available beds for admission. She claimed the delay in receiving medical care contributed to her sister's death.

Visibly heartbroken, Mzbel questioned why bed shortages at the country's largest referral hospital have persisted for decades.

“Every time there are no beds at Korle Bu, from when I was young until now. People are dying. Governments make promises which they are not even supposed to make because it's their duty to provide these things,” she said.

The video has since gone viral on social media, with many Ghanaians expressing sympathy to the bereaved family and sharing their own experiences with challenges in the country's public healthcare system.

Korle Bu Teaching Hospital has not publicly responded to Mzbel's claims.
