Okyeame Quophi claps back at Lawrence Tetteh over tribal commentary
Media practitioner Okyeame Quophi has criticised televangelist Dr. Lawrence Tetteh over his remarks targeting Accra-based media houses for sidelining the Ga language.
Dr Tetteh, speaking as part of his “This Nonsense Must Stop” campaign, argued that it is unacceptable for media outlets operating in the capital to broadcast predominantly in Twi while neglecting Ga, urging owners to incorporate the indigenous language to preserve cultural identity.
During an appearance on UTV Ghana, the Founder of Worldwide Miracle Outreach reiterated that his campaign, which dates back to the early 1990s, seeks to address practices he believes undermine national inclusivity.
“I have been speaking about this thing in the early 1990s. One of the nonsense that must stop is to establish a radio station in Accra and speak only Twi and not the Ga language, I have said it's not fair. This Nonsense Must Stop is not only about LGBTQ+,” he stated.
However, his comments have sparked mixed reactions online. In response to a video excerpt shared by Sammy Flex on Instagram, Okyeame Quophi urged the televangelist to avoid comments that could be interpreted as tribal.
“Please go listen to GBC Obonu FM. The media landscape is already diverse in language. Choose your choice. This nonsense of discrimination must stop,” he wrote.
Other social media users also weighed in on the debate. A user identified as its_Kweku questioned whether Dr Tetteh himself uses the Ga language in his ministry, arguing that leaders should promote unity rather than division.
Another commenter, Nana Frimpong, criticised the remarks, while Makadoe questioned why a man of God would describe the use of Twi on national television as “nonsense,” suggesting he establish his own platform to promote his preferences.
Dr Tetteh maintains that his position forms part of a broader effort to address societal concerns and promote respect for cultural diversity, both in the media and in everyday life.
