Ama For Miss earth

A 20-year-old, Ama Amissah Arthur might have thought she was through with pageants, being one of the finalists at the Model of The Universe Ghana event held a couple of months ago.

She probably thought wrong because, thanks to the organisers, she has the opportunity of representing Ghana at a brand new international beauty pageant, Miss Earth.

Ama, who left Ghana last Tuesday was bubbling with confidence, obviously prepared to rub shoulders with about 70 other representatives from all over the world.

What is Miss Earth? is the question most likely to be on the lips of many. Miss Earth is a new international beauty pageant organised and produced by Carousal Productions Inc. to search and develop true “beauties for a cause.”

The delegates and winners give meaning and relevance to the competition by promoting worthwhile environmental causes and getting actively involved in the caring for and preserving Mother Earth.

The event has already seen two editions with the third scheduled for Manila, Philippines on November 9, 2003 and will be shown live via ABS CBN Channel 2.

Why, in Ama’s view, was she chosen as Ghana’s representative? “The organisers saw something in me, they said I was smart and easily understood whatever was taught, for which reason it was going to be easy for me to be groomed for the event”.

A second year student of the University of Ghana studying Humanities, Ama added “it is a kind of intellectual pageant so I am working very hard on my project, my main aim is to help solve my country’s refuse disposal problems and encourage more people to recycle since one waste product can be the raw material for another useful product.”
