OJ Blaq, The Biggie Boy Lover

Andy Alexander Nii Akrashie goes by the name, OJ Black in showbiz circles

Most people know him as an actor who played Marlon in Suncity, a campus-based TV series and not as a musician but now Andy Alexander Nii Akrashie who goes by the name OJ Blaq is directing his energies at music under the Lynx Entertainment label. His debut album is titled The Biggie Boy Lover.

“I have not quit acting, I have a few scripts I am looking at now but I don't want anyone to disrespect me by giving me peanuts as artiste fee. That is one thing I don't like about the movie industry. People think they are doing you a favour by giving you roles but I think it is gross disrespect when they don't pay you well”, he told Showbiz.

Going back to his musical career which has seen him do two successful launches of his debut in Accra and Kumasi, OJ said his management team and himself settled on the title because that is his showbiz name and that also comes with his size.

Recounting some of the difficulties he went through prior to the release of his album, OJ Blaq said, “It is usually to do with people not believing in what you are doing and family members thinking you are wasting your time.”

“At the time I joined Lynx Entertainment, the label was fresh so we had to adjust and change the whole album because music was changing so management decided we keep changing till we got the best”.

OJ said that his management team also had a tough time with image and costuming and that also took a lot of time. Finally they settled on his current big size and long and pointed beard.

A personal favourite of the 11-track album is Chale Wote which the bulky artiste says is basically for the boys who go out to chase girls. “Every song talks about a different issue so everyone has a share there, both the young and the old.”

Other songs on the album are Biggie Boy Lover, Come Get Me, Target, Fire, Abusuafuor and Nhyira.

OJ Blaq attended Achimota Primary, Achimota School and the Ghana Institute of Journalism.

OJ has a younger sister called Ella and his mum is Mirabel Appiah who is a tutor at Accra High School.

To all his fans, he says, “expect great works, support me and criticise constructively, that is what keeps me going. The Biggie Boy Lover is here to stay”.
