State elections in Germany: Far-right AFD party expected to win in Saxony-Anhalt
Voters in the eastern German state of Saxony-Anhalt go to the polls in early September, with the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) 20 points ahead and targeting an absolute majority.
Lead candidate Ulrich Siegmund courts supporters as surveys put AfD above 40 per cent, while the Christian Democratic Union under incumbent Sven Schulze hovers near 24 per cent after 24 years in office.
