First group of deportees arrives in Haiti after TPS termination

A US Immigration and Customs Enforcement charter flight carried more than 161 Haitian deportees to Cap-Haïtien this week. It marked the first major removal operation to Haiti following the termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitian nationals in the United States.

Jean Négot Bonheur Delva, director general of Haiti's National Migration Office, said the deportees included people with criminal records, those without legal status, and some who had previously been covered by TPS or humanitarian parole.

The move follows a US Supreme Court decision that cleared the way for the Trump administration to end TPS protections, effective July 27. The termination affects roughly 350,000 Haitians, including many whose protections date back to the aftermath of Haiti's 2010 earthquake, putting them at risk of deportation.
