Top Story: GoldBod CEO Sammy Gyamfi Fires Back at Afenyo Markin Over $1.7bn Gold Losses
The fight over Ghana's $1.7 billion gold losses has turned personal as GoldBod CEO Sammy Gyamfi fires back at Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, accusing him of running a smear campaign, political blackmail and extortion.
Afenyo-Markin has blamed GoldBod for losses linked to the Bank of Ghana's Domestic Gold Purchase Programme, questioning why GoldBod should earn fees from the transactions while the associated losses appear on the BoG's accounts.
But Sammy Gyamfi insists GoldBod made no losses and challenges the Minority Leader to produce the IMF report he claims implicates GoldBod in the $1.7 billion loss.
Meanwhile, GHEITI Co-Chair Dr Steve Manteaw argues the losses are justified by the foreign exchange gains and wider economic benefits generated by the programme, while economist Prof Godfred Bokpin says flaws in the programme's design are responsible for the losses.
