Insecurity in northern Nigeria: Communities turn to vigilante groups for protection

Violent robberies and kidnappings are continuing across northern Nigeria, prompting some communities to turn to local vigilante groups for protection. According to Amnesty International, more than 1,100 people were forcibly taken between January and April this year. In Sokoto State, vigilantes are working alongside the military and police, using their knowledge of the terrain to track armed groups and gather intelligence.

Al Jazeera's Ahmed Idris reports from Gwadabawa town in northern Nigeria.
