Ousted Ukraine defence minister calls for elections despite wartime ban
Ukraine's recently ousted defence minister, Mykhailo Fedorov, has called for the country to prepare for elections despite a law banning them during the war with Russia. In a video posted on social media, Fedorov accused the government of a "systematic crisis of governance" and criticised what he called "wartime corruption". The popular former defence minister was sacked last month, triggering weeks of protests in Ukraine, with people calling for his reinstatement. Fedorov said: "Democracy cannot be held hostage by Russia. We are fighting precisely because we want to remain a free European state." He called for a "legal, safe, and realistic mechanism" to restore the full democratic process even amid a prolonged war.
