Residents of Hangarline are raising concerns over poor sanitation conditions after relying on a deplorable public toilet they say has become a health and safety risk.
Channel One TV's Northern Regional Bureau Chief, Shawana Yussif, reports that a newly completed toilet facility has remained locked and uncommissioned for more than five years, leaving residents dependent on the old facility.
Residents fear the poor sanitation conditions could contribute to a possible disease outbreak.
Assembly Member for the Alhassankura-Nbgaripe Electoral Area, Godwin Kumatey, says the newly opened facility will remain accessible to residents while measures are taken to ensure a reliable water supply and proper operation.
He says the Assembly is also engaging a temporary waste management officer and intensifying sanitation education to ensure the facility is properly maintained.
Municipal Environmental Health Officer Zakari Budali says waste containers are being monitored and cleared regularly to prevent refuse from accumulating and creating conditions that could trigger a disease outbreak.
