Access to Information: Stakeholders Seek Better Public Services for Rural Volta Communities

Limited access to information is leaving residents in some rural communities in the Volta Region, particularly young people, vulnerable to rights violations and excluded from public services and opportunities available to them.
Stakeholders say access to reliable information is critical to empowering citizens to understand and exercise their human rights, as well as access public services designed to support them.
However, many residents in underserved communities continue to struggle to obtain information about their rights, government programmes and services.
At a discussion on human rights and access to information in Ho, participants called on public institutions to move beyond traditional communication methods and adopt more proactive, community-based approaches to reach rural populations.
They warned that if the information gap between rural and urban communities is not addressed, existing inequalities could deepen.
The Volta Regional MMDCEs, Jerry Ameku, says Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies remain committed to ensuring residents have access to the information and services they need.
