'The Maths Didn't Make Sense' - Ben Boakye on AKSA's $720m Deal

Executive Director of the Africa Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP), Ben Boakye, breaks down the numbers behind the AKSA power plant deal, questioning how a contract for equipment worth a fraction of its value ballooned into a $720 million commitment for Ghana.

"When we checked the power plants that had been assembled by AKSA to bring to Ghana, we saw power plants being procured for about $1.2 million, which means it was a significantly lower investment. As to how we were asked as a country to pay $720 million, the maths didn't make sense." - Ben Boakye

Speaking on TV3's The Key Points, Boakye said the figures raise serious questions in light of the US conviction of former Goldman Sachs banker Asante Kwaku Berko, who was found guilty of bribing Ghanaian officials to help Turkish company AKSA Energy secure the deal.

Boakye also criticised Parliament for failing to conduct proper due diligence before ratifying the agreement, and called for those who negotiated and approved the contract to be held accountable for what went wrong.
