The AKSA bribery scandal comes under intense scrutiny on The Big Issue with Umaru Sanda Amadu, with Dr Sharif Khalid, Duncan Amoah and Dr Joshua Zaato weighing in on the allegations, accountability and Ghana's procurement processes.
Economic Adviser to the President, Dr Sharif Khalid, raises concerns about the optics surrounding K.T. Hammond's name in the AKSA case, arguing that his involvement in pursuing the case of another person makes it difficult to clearly distil the issues.
Executive Secretary of COPEC, Duncan Amoah, calls for the matter to be depoliticised, warning that reducing the scandal to an NPP versus NDC issue could obscure the critical questions. He says the AKSA case should trigger a broader review of Ghana's procurement processes, international contracts and the workings of Parliament.
Senior Fellow at Africa Policy Lens, Dr Joshua Zaato, examines the history surrounding Asante Berko's appointment as Managing Director of Tema Oil Refinery and his subsequent resignation amid scrutiny from US authorities. He also argues that persons whose names have been mentioned in the scandal should be investigated and, where appropriate, asked to step aside pending the outcome of investigations.
