Indiana declares emergency as historic storms batter the US Midwest

The governor of the US state of Indiana has declared an emergency after storms pounded parts of the Midwest, cutting power to hundreds of thousands of homes as emergency crews worked to rescue residents from flash flooding.

Powerful thunderstorms known as derechos produced wind gusts of 160km/h, and tornadoes tore through parts of the Chicago area, damaging homes and knocking out power to more than 300,000 people across three states. Forecasters are predicting additional rainfall as the region braces for more bad weather in the coming days.
