Robots doing the messy work underground in China #CoolChina

China's underground pipelines are about to get a lot smarter – and a lot safer. The country plans to build or renovate more than 700,000 kilometers of pipes over the next five years. Keeping them in check is a difficult job – so cities are handing it to robots.

In Nanning, southwest China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, inspection robots patrol buried gas pipelines every day. They spot temperature changes, gas leaks and other problems – all without a single human worker going underground. When they're done, they recharge themselves.

In Shiyan, central China's Hubei Province, robots are taking on sewage duty, inspecting pipes for cracks and leaks, eliminating dust and safety hazards along the way.

No hard hats, no cramped tunnels. Just robots doing the work humans used to dread.
