Residents and traditional authorities in Atronie in the Bono Region have staged a protest over the alleged destruction and pollution of the River Amoma, a major water source for the community.
The residents say illegal mining activities in and around the Atronie Stool Lands and Jinijini are threatening access to clean water and affecting farming activities.
The protest, which began with traditional rites at the bridge over the River Amoma, saw hundreds of residents express concern over the worsening condition of the river and demand urgent intervention from the authorities.
The community is calling on the government and relevant anti-illegal mining authorities to take action to protect River Amoma, farmlands and livelihoods.
