Nigel Farage faces 34 rivals in Clacton by-election

The ballot papers are nearly a metre long, with an unprecedented 34 candidates taking part in this special constituency election, and only one representing a mainstream political party. That's Nigel Farage, leader of the anti-immigrant Reform UK party and a man often tipped as a future British prime minister, who finds himself in a predicament of his own making, having resigned his parliamentary seat in Clacton last month over questions about his financial affairs, including a multimillion-dollar gift he failed to declare. He'd hoped to trigger a contest billed as the people against the establishment. Instead it's become Farage against a host of unlikely candidates, including Count Binface, a man in a spacesuit wearing a dustbin on his head. The parliamentary investigation into his finances is on hold but could resume immediately, potentially leading to his suspension or another, far more seriously contested by-election over the seat.
