Is a humanoid robot worth buying? | Counting the Cost: Worth it?
Humanoid robots are moving from the lab into the marketplace. Morgan Stanley estimates the industry could be worth $5 trillion by 2050, with more than a billion robots in use worldwide. China currently dominates the supply chain, producing components at a scale and price few rivals can match.
That has prompted the US to ban the imports of foreign-made robots over national-security concerns. Prices are falling fast, some Chinese humanoids now cost around $15,000, while basic models can sell for as little as $5,000.
As costs fall and capabilities improve, humanoid robots could move beyond factories and warehouses and eventually into homes.
But with the technology becoming another front in the US-China tech race, how cheap and capable do humanoid robots need to become before they are actually worth buying and who will dominate the market?
