The debate over Ghana's legal vacation system continues, with concerns being raised over the decision to allow certain cases to proceed during the period.
Lawyer and UPSA lecturer Ishaq Ibrahim says legal vacation is a long-standing tradition intended to give judges and lawyers time to refresh and prepare for the next legal year. However, he says the key concern is why particular cases have been prioritised for hearing during the vacation and whether the directive was adequately explained.
He also cautioned political actors against actions and comments that could undermine public confidence in the judiciary, stressing the importance of protecting judicial independence.
Former National DRIP Coordinator Nii Lante Vanderpuye says hearing sensitive criminal cases during legal vacation is not new, but believes the system can be improved through greater coordination between the Chief Justice and the Ghana Bar Association.
Both speakers also raised the need for meaningful reforms, including a more structured vacation system, published vacation court schedules and designated courts to handle urgent matters.
