82,500 Ghanaians Use Drugs, 16,300 From Ashanti Region – NACOC

The Director-General of the Narcotics Control Commission, Major General Maxwell Obuba, says an estimated 82,500 people use drugs in Ghana, with about 16,300 of them from the Ashanti Region.
He disclosed that a 2025 University of Ghana School of Public Health study found HIV prevalence among people who use drugs in the Ashanti Region at 6.6 percent, significantly higher than the national average of 1.4 percent.
Speaking at the International Youth Day celebration in Kumasi, Major General Obuba warned about the harmful effects of drug use and called for stronger prevention, education and support, particularly for young people.
