Executive Director of Global InfoAnalytics, Mussa Dankwah, joins Bernard Avle on The Point of View to unpack the latest polling data on President John Dramani Mahama, the performance of government, economic conditions and the political outlook ahead of Ghana's 2028 general elections.
The latest poll puts President Mahama's approval rating at 72%, with the Upper West Region recording the highest approval, followed by the Volta Region, while the Ashanti Region records the lowest.
Mussa Dankwah also examines how Ghanaians assess the government's overall performance and how their views on their own economic circumstances may be influencing those ratings.
On standard of living, 53% of respondents say their lives have improved compared to a year ago, while 19% say their standard of living has worsened and 23% say it has remained unchanged. Looking ahead, 71% are optimistic that their standard of living will improve over the next 12 months.
The discussion also takes a closer look at the performance of key government policies. The No Academic Fees Policy scores 6.1 out of 10, Big Push 6.0, tax relief 5.8, apprenticeship 5.5, the Women's Development Bank 4.6 and the 24-Hour Economy 4.2 out of 10.
Mussa Dankwah explains why the relatively low rating of some flagship policies could be a concern for government, particularly where voters may not be seeing the expected results or clearly connecting government interventions to improvements in their daily lives.
He also addresses the controversial debate over President Mahama's possible third term, revealing that 65% of respondents support his decision not to contest again, while 27% disagree. The poll also examines whether Ghanaians agree with those calling on Mahama to reconsider his position.
Another major focus is the growing importance of absentee voters. Dankwah reveals that a large majority of those who did not vote in the 2024 election are young people and that many who previously identified with the NPP have since moved into the floating voter category.
The latest data also tests possible 2028 presidential matchups involving Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and possible NDC contenders, including Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson and NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah.
In one scenario, Ato Forson leads Bawumia 57% to 35%, while Kennedy Agyapong records 4%. Another matchup involving Asiedu Nketia sees Bawumia improve slightly, but Dankwah says Kennedy Agyapong remains a significant factor who could influence the NPP's performance if he enters the race.
