Private-Sector Credit Surges 41.2% as BoG Pushes Banks to Lend More

The Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama, has urged commercial banks to sustain the expansion of credit to businesses as improving economic conditions drive a strong recovery in private-sector lending.
Private-sector credit grew by 41.2% year-on-year in June 2026, reaching GH¢119.6 billion, compared with 8.6% growth a year earlier.
Speaking at a meeting with Heads of Commercial Banks at the Bank Square, Dr. Asiama said the banking industry must now play a more active role in translating gains in macroeconomic stability into increased economic activity.
The Governor's call comes amid improving liquidity and lending conditions, with commercial banks increasingly seeking to expand their lending to private-sector borrowers.
