Africa Prepares for COP31 as Climate Risks Threaten Development Gains

The African Group of Negotiators on Climate Change is calling on African countries to adequately prepare and identify opportunities and risks that can collectively advance the continent's priorities at COP31.
The group held a strategic meeting in Accra on August 12 to review negotiation outcomes from the Bonn climate talks (SB64), assess their implications for Africa and establish a unified position ahead of COP31 in Antalya, Türkiye.
Speaking on the sidelines of the meeting, Chair of the African Group of Negotiators on Climate Change, Nana Dr. Antwi-Boasiako Amoah, said several key political and procedural issues remain unresolved and will require coordinated engagement ahead of COP31.
Also speaking at the event, West and Central Africa Lead for the UNFCCC, Walters Tubua, highlighted the impact of recent climate-related phenomena, including heatwaves, coastal erosion and flooding.
He warned that these challenges are undoing years of development gains across the continent and must be addressed urgently.
