Ghana's High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Sabah Zita Benson, has raised serious concerns over what she describes as “rot” uncovered in scholarship arrangements for Ghanaian students studying in the UK.
Speaking to Dr Ren, the High Commissioner said documents from the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat revealed cases in which scholarship beneficiaries allegedly travelled to the UK with spouses and children, with expenses including airfare and allowances reportedly covered with Ghanaian taxpayers' money.
She cited one case involving a scholarship beneficiary pursuing a master's programme, where the beneficiary's husband and three children allegedly received financial support linked to the relocation.
According to her account, airfare, visas and related expenses for one such family allegedly amounted to about £90,000, while monthly allowances were also reportedly paid to family members.
Sabah Zita Benson questioned whether such arrangements were fair to Ghanaian taxpayers, particularly when the scholarships are intended to support students who genuinely need the opportunity.
She has called for the National Investigation Bureau (NIB) to move quickly with investigations and ensure that anyone found to have abused the scholarship system is held accountable.
The High Commissioner also addressed concerns over outstanding scholarship payments, saying the matter is under investigation and that authorities will take steps to enforce the law.
