Kofi Tonto Denies Involvement in $19m Ghana Embassy Irregularities

Former Head of Information and Public Affairs at Ghana's Embassy in Washington, D.C., Kofi Tonto, has denied any involvement in an alleged fraudulent scheme linked to approximately US$19 million in irregularities at the mission.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, Mr. Tonto described attempts to associate him with the alleged scheme as misleading.
He explained that the US$800 payment referenced in the forensic audit was a legitimate child benefit paid to him in July 2021 following the birth of his daughter.
According to Mr. Tonto, although the forensic audit referenced the payment, it did not identify him as a person of interest requiring investigation into the alleged financial irregularities.
He has therefore urged his family, friends and the general public to disregard what he described as a distorted narrative seeking to associate him with wrongdoing.
