Concerns have been raised over the unhygienic conditions at a fish processing site in Tema Abonkor, with warnings that the traditional methods used could pose health risks to both fish processors and consumers.
Channel One TV reporter Manuel Ayama says the conditions at the site were alarming, particularly because the processed fish is eventually taken to markets for consumers, who may have no knowledge of where or how it was prepared.
He says transitioning the fish processors from traditional methods to safer and more hygienic practices will require time, support and appropriate facilities.
Meanwhile, PRO of the Tema Metropolitan Assembly, Frank Asante, says the Assembly, together with the FDA, public health officials and other stakeholders, is engaging the fish processors on safer processing methods.
He says the Assembly plans to reorganise the Abonkor fish processing area and provide safer, more hygienic spaces for the women to operate while protecting their livelihoods.
The Assembly also says routine monitoring will continue to ensure that basic hygiene standards are maintained.
