The debate over Ghana's legal vacation has intensified, with political actors and analysts weighing the need for speedy trials against the rights of accused persons to adequately prepare their defence.
NDC Communications Team member Hamza Suhuyini says legal vacation is not a holiday for lawyers but a period for judges to reflect, learn and keep abreast of developments in the law.
He has defended the Chief Justice's decision to allow selected criminal trials and applications to continue during the period, arguing that speedy trial is an important component of fair trial.
Engineer and analyst Michael Kosi Dedey, however, says prolonged legal processes involving politicians accused of wrongdoing can undermine public confidence in Ghana's justice system.
NPP Communications Team member Eric Twum has also raised concerns about consistency in the application of justice, arguing that ordinary Ghanaians and political actors should be subject to the same legal principles.
The discussion also examines the balance between speedy trials, fair trial rights, defence preparation and equal application of the law.
