A forensic audit by the Auditor-General has uncovered what it says is the alleged diversion or unauthorised collection of about US$19 million from visa and passport applicants at Ghana's Embassy in Washington, D.C.
According to the audit findings, the scheme involved unapproved fees charged to applicants through a redirected private online portal, raising serious questions about the handling of consular revenues and financial accountability at the embassy.
The findings have put the spotlight on the management of visa and passport application fees and the systems used to collect funds from Ghanaians and other applicants.
