Galamsey Sites Expose Birim River to Danger – Alexander Acquah

The Member of Parliament for Akim Oda, Alexander Akwasi Acquah, is advocating for stronger local involvement in the fight against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, in the Birim Central Municipality.
The MP is calling on the clergy, Muslim leaders and traditional authorities to speak up and support efforts to protect the environment and ensure gains made in the fight against galamsey are not reversed.
Mr. Acquah says the Birim River is under attack, following a tour of some illegal mining sites behind the Sawmill Birim Bridge.
The MP observed several acres of land that had been mined by a group operating under the name Ghana Consolidated Diamonds Limited (GCD), Akwatia, with uncovered pits left close to the Birim River.
He is urging stakeholders in the municipality to take stronger action to protect the river and prevent further environmental destruction.
