“Key Positions Require Competent People” — Analysts Debate President Mahama’s New Appointments

The appointments of Kenneth Gilbert Adjei as Defence Minister-designate and Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings as Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation Minister-designate have sparked debate over competence, sector expertise and leadership experience.
Editor of the NewsCenta Newspaper, Elvis Darko, questioned whether Kenneth Gilbert Adjei's background adequately prepares him to lead the Defence Ministry, arguing that critical institutions such as defence and security require leaders with proven expertise and strong track records.
He also raised concerns about Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings' appointment to the Environment Ministry, particularly the challenge of tackling illegal mining, while suggesting that her medical background could have been better suited to the Health Ministry.
Resident Country Director of International Investments LLC, Ibrahim Adjei, similarly called for greater emphasis on competence and track record in appointments to critical institutions. He also stressed the need for greater transparency and accountability in the use of funds allocated to the Defence Ministry.
However, Deputy CEO of the Forestry Commission, Elikem Kotoko, welcomed the appointments, describing Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings' appointment as an Environment Minister-designate as a “masterstroke” and defending the government's approach to its ministerial reshuffle.
The panel also discussed the appointments of Mahama Ayariga and Ahmed Ibrahim, as well as broader questions surrounding ministerial appointments and accountability in government.
