Ahmed Ibrahim Warns of More Flooding Without Increased Sanitation Funding

Local Government Minister Ahmed Ibrahim has warned that inadequate funding for sanitation could contribute to a repeat of the June 29 flooding disaster.
He says although government has increased funding to Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies, the amount allocated to sanitation remains insufficient to address the country's sanitation, waste management and drainage challenges.
According to the Minister, the 2026 allocation for the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) has been increased to GH¢8.7 billion, but only 10 percent is allocated to sanitation.
Speaking at the second National Dialogue on Decentralization and Responsive Governance, Mr Ibrahim warned that without additional support, the available funding may not be enough to address waste management concerns across the country.
The Minister also disclosed that the Ministry has issued a 2026 to 2030 fee-fixing guideline to provide uniform standards for MMDAs in setting fees, levies and charges.
He said the guideline is expected to improve internally generated funds and give assemblies a more reliable domestic revenue base to finance sanitation infrastructure.
