Netanyahu’s rejection of Gaza plan exposes limits of Trump’s pressure: Analysis

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has rejected the peace plan for Gaza announced last month by the US President's Board of Peace. He says an Israeli pull-out will not happen until Hamas is fully disarmed. In an interview with Al Jazeera Phyllis Bennis, a Middle East specialist and fellow at the Institute for Policy Studies, said Netanyahu's rejection is “not surprising” and that US pressure has been only “in the arena of words”. She said the US would need to cut off military aid and arms transfers to Israel to apply real pressure, saying: “No more money, no more weapons, period, full stop.” Bennis said Netanyahu is under pressure from his electoral coalition and Israeli public opinion, while Trump faces a divided political base and upcoming midterm elections. She warned that the current stalemate means the “genocide is continuing”, saying 1,100 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza by Israeli strikes since the ceasefire deal was agreed in October. She also said AIPAC money is “now toxic” among many Democratic candidates and that meaningful US pressure on Israel is “unlikely” before the midterms.
