Ayariga Lacks Grassroots Experience for Local Gov’t Ministry – Mireku Duker | #TheBigIssue

Former Tarkwa Member of Parliament George Mireku Duker has questioned whether former Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga has the grassroots experience required to effectively lead the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs.
Speaking on The Big Issue, Mr Duker acknowledged Mr Ayariga's experience as a parliamentarian, lawyer and former minister but argued that the Local Government Ministry requires a strong understanding of grassroots politics and local governance.
Mr Duker, who previously served as a Municipal Chief Executive and worked at the Local Government Ministry, said the portfolio requires a minister who can relate directly with ordinary Ghanaians and understand the dynamics of local governance.
He nevertheless praised Mr Ayariga as a capable lawyer, experienced politician and personal friend, stressing that his concerns relate specifically to the demands of the Local Government portfolio.
The comments follow President John Dramani Mahama's latest ministerial reshuffle, which saw Mr Ayariga appointed Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs.
