Indonesia's waste crisis : Many landfills in Indonesia have exceeded capacity

Indonesia faces a mounting waste crisis, with many landfills already at or beyond capacity; at Bantargebang near Jakarta, rubbish spans 100 hectares and rises to 65 metres — roughly a 16-storey height.

The government plans to end open dumping, shift to controlled disposal and expand sorting so landfills take only residual waste, aiming to cut emissions and reduce hazards after a March collapse that killed seven people; but the changes alarm informal waste collectors, though officials promise safer, formal jobs.
