2026 is perfect for the Perseid shower! | DW News

Schedule for August 12-13 and take your date to see the solar eclipse and the Perseid meteor shower. #DWScience What you'll see glowing there are dust particles and occasional larger chunks shed by the comet Swift-Tuttle on its 133 year-long journey around the sun. The comet is quite a big boy, measuring 26 kilometers (16 miles) across – double the size of the object that wiped out the dinosaurs. It was discovered back in 1862 and got its funky name from the two gentlemen who spotted it first: Lewis Swift and Horace Tuttle. The last time Swift-Tuttle reached its closest point to the Sun was in 1992, and it's not coming back until 2125. But its trail still graces us with the yearly stunning celestial event we call the Perseid meteor shower.
