Trump is caught in an 'escalation trap' in Iran war: Analysis

In an interview with Al Jazeera, University of Chicago professor Robert Pape warned that the United States is caught in what he called "the most wicked escalation trap in history" with Iran. He said US air and naval strikes have achieved tactical successes but have "failed to achieve any of its strategic objectives," arguing that Iran has emerged stronger than before the war. Pape said President Donald Trump faces a choice between accepting Iran's growing influence or escalating the conflict further, saying: "There's no third option." He warned that Trump is already seeing the limits of air and naval power and could be pushed towards ground operations, potentially seeking a symbolic victory ahead of the midterm elections. Pape also argued that Trump would struggle to accept Iranian control over the Strait of Hormuz and predicted continued escalation. He warned that Iran could move towards testing nuclear weapons within two to three years if the current trajectory continues.
