The National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Salam Mustapha, has defended the party's decision to proceed with its “Democracy Under Attack” demonstration despite the protest coinciding with the national memorial service for victims of the August 6, 2025 helicopter crash.
Mr. Mustapha said the NPP had absolute respect for the memory of the eight individuals who lost their lives, insisting that the decision to hold the demonstration on the same day was based on the party's already scheduled activities calendar.
He explained that the party was not aware of government's memorial programme when selecting the date for the protest and had considered its internal activities, including constituency and regional elections.
The NPP Youth Organiser also rejected claims that the demonstration was insensitive, arguing that the late public officials and military personnel believed strongly in democratic principles and would identify with the issues raised during the protest.
The “Democracy Under Attack” demonstration was organised in Accra over allegations of selective justice, political persecution and abuse of state institutions.
