Research Fellow at the Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research (ISSER), Prof. Charles Ackah, says Ghana's economic challenges are partly due to insufficient government investment in critical areas that drive productivity and competitiveness.
Speaking on Point of View with Bernard Avle, Prof. Ackah explained that government spending is not only inadequate but also often not directed toward key development-enabling sectors such as infrastructure, transport, agriculture and productive investments.
He compared Ghana's investment trajectory with countries such as Malaysia and South Korea, arguing that while the three countries had similar levels of public investment in the 1970s, the others accelerated through sustained capital investment while Ghana remained largely stagnant.
Prof. Ackah also discussed private sector investment, arguing that it is closely linked to government investment because strong public infrastructure and policies create an environment that attracts private capital.
He further criticised what he described as the conservative approach of the Bank of Ghana, arguing that central banks in some successful economies have played a more active role in supporting economic development.
