Agbogbloshie Drain: AMA Calls for Demolition of Illegal Structures Before GARID Works

The Head of Waste Management at the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), Solomon Noi, is calling on the Ministry of Works and Housing to prioritise the demolition of illegal structures within the buffer zone of the Agbogbloshie Gallaway drain.

He says clearing the structures will allow for effective desilting works before the construction of the drain under the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) Project.

According to Solomon Noi, the encroachment of about 50 metres of the drain's buffer zone by squatters has contributed to increased dumping of refuse into the drain and is making maintenance efforts difficult.

Speaking during a monitoring visit by the Greater Accra Regional Security Council, he said addressing the encroachment will support efforts to reduce flooding in Accra.
