Gold for Reserves: IMF Reveals $1.7bn Loss From BoG Domestic Gold Purchases

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) says the Bank of Ghana's Domestic Gold Purchase Programme (DGPP) recorded losses of more than $1.7 billion in 2025, while also playing a major role in rebuilding Ghana's foreign exchange reserves and supporting the stability of the cedi.
In its 2026 Article IV Consultation and proposed Policy Coordination Instrument (PCI) report, the IMF said the DGPP became the dominant source of the central bank's foreign exchange inflows and reserve accumulation.
The Fund noted that the expansion of the programme resulted in losses equivalent to about 1.5 percent of Ghana's Gross Domestic Product (GDP), with almost all of the losses linked to gold purchases under the Gold for Reserves initiative.
