Volta Region Healthcare Crisis: Rural Communities Struggle to Access Specialised Services

Healthcare delivery in parts of the Volta Region continues to face challenges as rural communities struggle to access specialised medical services.
Speaking on the situation, Channel One TV's Volta Regional Correspondent, Desmond Selase Aggor, highlighted the difficulties facing residents in the Ho West District, one of the longest and most geographically stretched districts in the region.
He explained that several communities within the district are located far from major health facilities, making access to critical healthcare services difficult.
According to him, apart from one polyclinic in Beje, most health facilities in the district are clinics that mainly handle minor cases, forcing patients with serious conditions to be referred to the Ho Municipal Hospital and the Volta Regional Hospital.
He noted that the absence of adequate equipment, specialised services and reliable emergency transport has created additional pressure on patients and health workers, particularly during emergencies such as road accidents.
Although recent support with ambulances has helped address some challenges, health authorities say more investment is needed in healthcare infrastructure and equipment to improve access to quality care for residents.
