Abdul El-Sayed wins MI Democratic Senate primary, CNN projects

Abdul El-Sayed will win the Democratic nomination for US Senate in Michigan, CNN's Decision Desk projects, handing progressives a major win in a battleground primary critical to the party's chances of taking back control of the upper chamber of Congress.

El-Sayed, a former Wayne County public health official, defeated Rep. Haley Stevens, a moderate congresswoman from Michigan's 11th District, in a contentious race animated by deep party divides over policy, ideology and campaign strategy.
