Ghana's proposed constitutional amendments have sparked debate among legal practitioners and political figures over the direction of the reforms.
Speaking on The Point of View with Bernard Avle, private legal practitioner Oliver Barker-Vormawor highlighted what he described as progressive elements in the government's proposals, including the removal of the Attorney General from Cabinet and the acceptance of a citizens' initiative mechanism for proposing constitutional amendments.
He argued that the move could provide a different response to concerns surrounding the independence of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).
However, former Tamale Central MP Inusah Fuseini criticised proposals to extend the tenure of the President and Members of Parliament from four years to five years, questioning whether the change would necessarily improve governance efficiency.
He also raised concerns about proposals concerning the election of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs).
