Accra Mayor Explains Delay in Kaneshie Footbridge Rehabilitation

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has explained the delay in rehabilitating the Kaneshie Market footbridges, attributing it to ongoing works under the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) Project.
Speaking to Channel One News, Accra Mayor Michael Kpakpo Allotey said the footbridges are connected to the wider GARID drainage project, making it necessary to complete related works before rehabilitation can begin.
He explained that the GARID team is expected to block one side of the road soon to allow for drainage works, with traffic from Mallam towards Kaneshie expected to use the alternative lane during the exercise.
The AMA Chief Executive said engagements with the GARID team indicate that challenges affecting the project have been addressed and work is expected to progress.
He added that the Assembly cannot repair the footbridges immediately only for them to be affected by ongoing GARID activities, which could result in additional costs.
Mr. Allotey also assured commuters that traffic control personnel will be stationed at the footbridge areas daily, including Sundays, to assist pedestrians cross safely.
