Gaza peace roadmap stalls as Israel's $19bn arms industry 'booms': Antony Loewenstein
Gaza's health ministry has reported a sharp rise in Israeli killings across the strip, with 152 Palestinians killed in July — more than any other month this year. In an interview with Al Jazeera, author and journalist Antony Loewenstein said Israel's recent attacks suggest it does not accept the terms of the US-brokered roadmap for disarming Hamas and withdrawing Israeli troops announced by Donald Trump days earlier. Loewenstein argued that the US has so far failed to apply sufficient pressure on Israel to change course. He said Israel's expanding weapons and surveillance industry has benefited from the war, with Gaza becoming a focus in the development and promotion of military technology. He also said Israel continues to use artificial intelligence in targeting operations in Gaza, Lebanon and Iran, arguing that the approach prioritises mass destruction over precision strikes. Loewenstein warned that a change of leadership in Israel may not significantly alter policies towards Gaza and the occupied West Bank, saying broader political shifts and accountability would be needed.
